Headquarter of Mustang, Jomsom is major gateway for Upper Mustang. It is often spell as Dzongsam. At an elevation on 2700 m it stretch over both river bank of Kali Gandaki. Dhaulagiri Massif in the west and Nilgiri Massif in the east squeeze Jomsom. It is mainly inhabited by native Thakali People. This is major administrative center of both government and private sector. Many trekker flew from Pokhara to Jomsom and commence their trek to Lo Manthang. Also many terminate their Annapurna Circuit Trek here and fly to Pokhara.
There is an ATM machine at Jomsom as well. You can take out the cash and they accept major credit card network. Also, Himalayan Java Coffee had their outlet in Jomsom. They roast coffee every day. You can find a departmental store at reasonable price. The road had brought significant changes in living. Especially in comparing to the past, when it used to be a part of trans himalayas salt trading route. There are conservation office and TIMS counter as well. Also Nepal Army had their own base here. There is a rock climbing wall as well to the northwest of town, used for training new military. Jomsom airport operates frequent daily flight connecting Pokhara. Every afternoon strong wind from north does it work in the valley. It is on the complete rain shadow of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. The area received a rare rainfall. Deserted plateau very similar to Tibet stretches from here. As a part of a mountain airport there occurs frequent flight cancellations. Don’t worry, you can take a jeep from Jomsom to Pokhara. Because of syndicate you need to change minimum of four jeeps. If you have a time to wait in Jomsom then explore Marpha. It is a delightful apple capital of Nepal. You can either hike or rent a bike and ride to Marpha. Try local apple products ranging from candy to brandy.
There are a monastery and museum in Jomsom. The town is worth to walk around. Old Jomsom looks more medieval with narrow alley in between settlements. There are pubs and snooker house in Jomsom. Kagbeni is on the north. Kaligandaki river from a world’s deepest gorge on south of Jomsom. This is the very famous biking destination for the enthusiast. Strenuous grade Dhaulagiri Trek end at village of Marpha. Many trekkers go for Jomsom Muktinath Trek passing through Ghorepani and Poonhill. Three out of five of our upper mustang trekking itinerary, starts with a flight to Jomsom. From here Kagbeni is at three hours of walking distance. For Upper Dolpo to Lo Manthang and Nar Phu to Lomanthang Traverse we will only terminate our trek here. However, for another three itinerary we will both start and end the trek in Jomsom.
